Fabrication of electrically conductive metal patterns at the surface of polymer films by microplasma-based direct writing.

We describe a direct-write process for producing electrically conductive metal patterns at the surface of polymers. Thin films of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) loaded with Ag ions are reduced by a scanning, atmospheric-pressure microplasma to form crystalline Ag features with a line width of 300 μm. Materials analysis reveals that the metallization occurs in a thin layer of ∼5 μm near the film surfa...

Reduced adhesion of human blood platelets to polyethylene tubing by microplasma surface modification

A hollow-cathode microplasma modified the lumenal surface of small-diameter polyethylene (PE) tubing. A microwave cavity diagnostic was used to measure the density of the microplasma. Plasma light output was observed with a monochromator at various positions along the PE tube to assess uniformity. Treatment effectiveness was evaluated by measuring the variation in capillary rise at various posi...

pH dependence of water-solubility of single-walled carbon nanotubes treated by microplasma in aqueous solution

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were solubilized by microplasma in pH-controlled aqueous solution. The SWCNTs were highly dispersed and solubilized in water under higher pH condition (pH > 9). Surface of the SWCNT was functionalized by carboxylate ion (-COO) and negatively charged during the microplasma treatment. A possible mechanism of water-solubility of SWCNT was briefly discussed.

Atmospheric-Pressure Plasma Reduction of Metal Cation-Containing Polymer Films to Produce Electrically Conductive Nanocomposites by an Electrodiffusion Mechanism

We describe an atmospheric-pressure plasma process for the reduction of metal cation-containing polymer films to form electrically conductive patterns. Thin films of poly(acrylic) acid (PAA) containing silver ions (Ag) were prepared by mixing the polymer with silver nitrate (AgNO3) in solution to produce a cross-linked precipitate, homogenizing, and depositing onto a substrate by doctor’s blade...

Biological Effects and Enhancement of Percutaneous Absorption on Skin by Atmospheric Microplasma Irradiation

Atmospheric plasma is attracting interest for medical applications and clinical phases. We adduce the following questions to guide the future research in plasma medicine. 1. Is plasma medicine an effective method for treating various symptoms? 2. If not, what combination of drugs in addition to plasma irradiation will be required? 3. Can plasma irradiation be an effective method for drug admini...
